Are RV Inspections Really A Big Deal?
I once helped a client named Barbara with her very first RV purchase. She had never owned or traveled in an RV before, but she was passionate about taking her autistic daughter across the country to experience new places together. Barbara was in her mid sixties at the time and understandably overwhelmed by the entire process.
The first inspection I performed for her was at a well known dealership, where she was considering a used fifth wheel. While we were there, the dealership staff repeatedly pressured her to come inside and sign the paperwork for what they described as a “water tight” unit.
About fifteen minutes into my inspection, I discovered significant damage to the roof. The water intrusion was extensive. The antenna had nearly sunk through the roof, creating a noticeable depression from the rot beneath it. Even now, five years later, it remains the worst RV I have inspected in terms of overall condition.
I asked Barbara to step outside so I could quietly show her what I had found. Once she saw the damage for herself, she wisely walked away from the deal.
I took a personal interest in helping her after that. My only goal was to make sure she and her daughter started their journey with a safe, reliable RV that I felt confident they could travel in.
We eventually found the right unit, and they began traveling the country together. I would often hear from them along the way, sharing updates from the road.
